Mactel Communications Inc.

Planning and Engineering of Co-Location Facilities

Mactel has established a reputation that is second to none in the areas of Co-Location Planning and Engineering and is considered to be the Co-Location experts in Canada.

Whether the Co-Location design is for an Incumbent Telecommunications Service Provider, a New Entrant into the market or a complex Carrier Hotel design, Mactel can provide the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) with the credentials and experience to provide superior quality products and services.

An example of Mactel’s qualifications in Co-Location is that since 1998 Mactel has planned and engineered 2800 Initial and Subsequent Co-Location Requests into 135+ Ontario Central Offices. Canadian Co-Locators have pointed to the Mactel Co-Location Plans as being superior to those in other provinces across Canada.

For New Entrants, Mactel Co-Location SMEs can provide invaluable information and recommendations to help ensure they can enter the market at a minimum of cost when designing Co-Location facilities, particularly in the area of power, which is the most costly of facilities when implementing a Co-Location arrangement.

Whether your requirement is for Transport, High Speed or Entertainment (IPTV), Mactel can provide new entrants and/or existing Co-Locators with the following:
  • Assistance with forms to minimize churn and cost during the request process
  • Engineering specifications for Co-Location equipment
  • Recommendations to minimize the cost of Co-Location facilities, especially DC Power which is the most costly Co-Location facility
  • Long term floor layout strategies to optimize maintenance and connectivity
  • Recommended lighting, receptacles & grounding arrangements
  • Co-ordination with ILEC installation Co-ordinator to arrange for the installation equipment
  • Installation of Co-Locator relay racks/cabinets, equipment, and connections once facilities are available from the ILEC

For Incumbents, Mactel Co-Location Implementation Plans provide existing Telco Service Providers with a ‘one stop shopping’ approach for the design of space, equipment floor layouts, connectivity and power delivery associated with a request for Regulatory Co-Location in one of its Central Offices. Mactel SMEs are familiar with all the latest CRTC Telecom Decisions, as well and previous All-Party agreements with regard to Regulatory Co-Location in Canada.

Mactel Co-Location Implementation Plans and Engineering Specifications are all supported by AutoCAD drawings and incorporate the following:
  • Suggested location and size of Co-Location Area
  • Design of construction site preparation elements such as enclosures, lighting, receptacles, environmental conditioning, heat dissipation, etc.
  • Equipment floor layout designs
  • Connectivity and demarcation arrangements
  • Power delivery and grounding arrangements
  • Overhead ironwork and cable racking designs
  • Fiber entrance routes
  • Order of magnitude infrastructure requirements (e.g. power equipment, cabling, cable racking) to enable the Incumbent to solicit competitive bids by contractors
For Carrier Hotels, Mactel can provide the entire design of the proposed site, including connectivity, demarcation and power arrangements. In addition, because Mactel has on contract a Regulatory and Investment Expert (see page “Co-Location Investments and Consulting”) we are able to provide the investments required to establish the connectivity and powering within the hotel which can assist the owner to develop the charges for various facilities.
